Independent Rights Advice: Supporting patient autonomy during involuntary care
June 20 @ 11:00 am - 12:00 pm

How can we support dignity, agency, and informed decision-making—even within systems of involuntary mental health care?
Join us for a powerful session highlighting the work of the Independent Rights Advice Service (IRAS)—a legal information service designed to uphold patient rights under BC’s Mental Health Act. Grounded in values of person-centered care and psychosocial rehabilitation (PSR), this webinar will explore how IRAS is working to promote autonomy, equity, and relational advocacy for individuals receiving involuntary treatment.
Presenters Rhea Evans (Independent Rights Advisor, CMHA Vernon) and Sarah Irving (Provincial Manager, IRAS) will share real-life stories, lessons learned during IRAS’s first year of operations, and reflections on what it means to embed rights-based support in a system not originally built for it.
This session is ideal for practitioners, educators, researchers, peer supporters, and system leaders seeking to strengthen recovery-oriented practices in complex care environments.
