Incorporating the Voices of Lived Experience of Psychosis into Medical Education

June 27 @ 11:00 am - 12:00 pm

Incorporating the voices of individuals with lived experience of psychosis into medical education has the potential to profoundly enrich the training of future mental health professionals. Individuals with lived experience have important perspectives to share about the nature of psychosis, its treatment, and the mental health system itself. This panel, comprised of two clinicians and two people with lived experience of psychosis, will share ways in which those voices have been incorporated into medical education within the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences at Emory University. The presentation also addresses the challenges of integrating these voices into medical education, including potential ethical concerns, the need for appropriate support for both students and participants with lived experience, and institutional resistance to curriculum changes. The panel will discuss strategies to mitigate these challenges, such as providing training for individuals sharing their experiences, ensuring a supportive environment, and demonstrating the value of these programs through research and feedback.

By the end of the presentation, participants will be able to:

  1. Articulate the key benefits of incorporating lived experiences into psychiatric education, including enhanced empathy, reduced stigma, and improved communication skills among medical trainees.
  2. Identify and describe at least three effective methodologies for integrating lived experience into psychiatric curricula, such as structured programs, guest lectures, and interactive workshops.
  3. Recognize common challenges associated with integrating voices of lived experience into medical education and will be able to propose practical strategies to overcome these challenges, ensuring a supportive and ethical implementation.
